Sonotube Man II
Static paper tube take on a life of its own.
Sonotube Man II began standing watch in mid-August—a true, authentic, genuine symbol of the strength of his brand.
Whenever possible we like to make our client’s actual product the key focus of their trade show exhibit. Aside from being more cost effective than fancy custom displays with photos of pretty people living their happy lifestyles, it is, in fact, what most trade show attendees want to see. In general, trade show attendance has been down considerably from decades past although the quality of attendees is much better—more buyers and decision makers, fewer trick-or-treaters filling show bags with cheap goodies.
So if you can make a static paper tube take on a life of its own, it tends to get more folks at the show to stop and look.
That is what happened this year at World of Concrete. Sonotube Man became the buzz of Las Vegas Convention Center’s South Hall. Aside from attracting many obvious double takes, the 13.5-foot tall man of tubes had hundreds of attendees and exhibitors wanting to get his photo or take selfies with him.
Except for his wood and steel skeleton, Sonotube Man is made entirely of actual Sonotube concrete forms. Even his shoes, hard hat and safety glasses were created from the same paper tubes that make concrete columns for buildings, bridges, parking decks and other structures. SELMARQ turned to a longtime associate, Gene Hopkins of Gene Hopkins Design, to fabricate the character. Hopkins spent several weeks molding the man from two different types of forms. In addition to giving him the powerful physique of a typical concrete worker, Hopkins had to make the structure strong enough to withstand cross-country shipping yet be simple enough to assemble and disassemble easily in the exhibit hall.
Our client was greatly pleased with the impression that Sonotube Man made at the show. He promises to make an encore appearance in January. What’s more, they asked to have another slightly smaller version made for the lobby of the Sonotube offices in Hartsville, South Carolina.
